“And this reset me and my wife in a very big way. I just thought of grief as something incredibly big and almost impossible to get over,” he said.
Pierce said the inspiration for the film came from bereavement groups where people share how they have worked to process the loss of a child.
“I was inspired by the bereavement groups I would go to with my wife,” Pierce said. “There were a lot of people talking about how they were moved by watching films with pregnant actresses. And there was a lot of discussion about grief between couples who deal with it differently – either one of you wants to talk about it, or you don’t.”
Pierce said those conversations helped him realize how common such events are for many.

“So, I finally realized that this is something that a lot of couples go through, and wouldn’t it be nice to have something that could reflect that experience and maybe help them relate?”
Pierce said Disney’s Chris Buck suggested he read “Permission to Grieve: A New Approach to Grief,” by Tom Zuba.
“There’s a line in there that says, ‘Grief has a way of tearing you apart,’ Pierce said. “And I was like, that’s how to find this moment. Mom and dad are getting separated. And that was related to my experience in many ways.”

“I had this idea that you can experience a great loss and go through the stages of grief, and then start the next chapter,” he added. “But that’s not true. What we learned is that grief is something you learn to relate to and carry with you. Over time it becomes easier to bear, but it can also be very difficult, so I wanted to show this concept of wearing your scars with pride.”
