Did Jack Ryan’s hilarious TV series predict the US invasion of Venezuela? That’s the question some social media users are asking after a video clip of the series went viral over the weekend – more than five years after it was first broadcast.
The Trump administration on Saturday launched a “major strike” in Venezuela, which led to the capture of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores..
This happened a few months after the US military began attacking the coast of Venezuela, and the sinking of many ships in the region, which US President Donald Trump and his team said were being used for drug trafficking.
Jack Ryan, an American political fiction series on Amazon Prime, is the most recent version of the title character as written in the novels of author Tom Clancy.
In this adaptation, which premiered in 2018, Jack Ryan is played by actor John Krasinski.
In the show’s second season, which aired in October 2019, Krasinski’s character is seen giving a presentation to a packed lecture hall and asking them the question, “What do you think is the greatest danger in the world?”
In response, some of the actors in attendance raised their hands and gave answers that included “Russia,” “China,” and “North Korea.”
Krasinski’s character then asks: “Venezuela?”
One person raises his hand.
He then goes on to suggest why Venezuela may be one of the biggest threats to the world beyond those previously suggested, and especially a threat to the United States, within the show’s narrative.
“The truth is that Venezuela is undoubtedly the single largest source of oil and minerals in the world,” said the character.
The character continues, after explaining the resources that Venezuela has, that the country at that time, was considered close to “economic collapse,” and was going to be a “failed country.”
“Analysts’ forecasts, as of today, have the probability of the complete economic collapse of Venezuela by 87 percent. In the news, they will call it a ‘disaster,’ but in the world, they will call it a ‘failed state,'” said the character, adding, “Some examples of failed countries in recent history are Yemen, Iraq, Syria.”
Finally, Jack Ryan’s character explains that the country can be used by other nations by being close to America.
“Venezuela is also the only one of these (‘failed states’) within 30 minutes of the US’s next-generation nuclear missiles,” the character continued.
“The big players in the world … for them, unstable governments are a great opportunity. So, Russia and China will never be a big threat (to the US) until countries like Venezuela leave the door open in our backyard.”
Is there truth in quotes?
Although the clip may be from a fantasy series, many of the feelings are not entirely true, according to at least one expert who shared the video clip with Global News.
“By some measures, yes, Venezuela has the largest crude oil reserves in the world,” said Luis Van Isschot, a professor of history at the University of Toronto.
Van Isschot also introduced the term “failed condition” as used in a certain area.
“This is an interesting word – a failed state. What kind of government exists if a large part of the country is controlled by illegal armed groups and criminal groups?” you prune.
“Venezuela has had one of the biggest exodus of refugees in the last few years, mainly because of the ongoing economic crisis there. But does that mean it’s a failed country? As a historian, I wouldn’t say so.”
Van Isschot noted, however, that although some international actors may be involved in what is happening in Venezuela, their focus is more likely to be on oil and other resources than to pose a direct military threat to the United States, as was seen during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
The question now is: what happens next?
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed concern on Monday about the escalation of instability in Venezuela after Maduro’s capture.
“I am deeply concerned about the possible escalation of destabilization in the country, the possible impact on the region, and the precedent that could set how interstate relations are conducted,” Guterres said in a statement sent to the council by UN political affairs chief Rosemary DiCarlo.
Guterres called on all Venezuelan actors to participate in an inclusive and democratic dialogue, adding: “I welcome and am ready to support all efforts aimed at helping the Venezuelan people to find a peaceful way forward.”
Lawmakers aligned with the ruling party, including Maduro’s son, gathered in the capital, Caracas, to follow the planned swearing-in ceremony of the National Assembly for a term that will last until 2031.
Delcy Rodríguez, who served as Maduro’s vice president and vowed to cooperate with the Trump administration, was sworn in as interim president.
He was sworn in by his brother, Jorge Rodríguez, who was also appointed speaker.
Trump had previously warned that he would face “a huge price” if he did not cooperate with him.
In an interview over the weekend with Global News, former US Ambassador to Venezuela James Story said there are many unanswered questions, but the numbers are high.
“The issue here is how do you rebuild the country after it has been destroyed? Those institutions have been subservient to a small power base for the past 25 years,” he said, referring to Maduro’s authoritarian hold on Venezuela’s institutions.
“How do you get the judges to start judging neutrally? How do you ensure that education is provided to everyone regardless of politics?
