DiCaprio accepted the Desert Palm Award remotely because of the strikes in Venezuela

Actor Leonardo DiCaprio accepted the Desert Palm Achievement Award remotely on Saturday due to travel restrictions caused by US strikes in Venezuela.

DiCaprio was to accept an award at the Palm Springs International Film Festival for his role in “One Battle After Another.” He welcomed her from afar after being unable to travel to St. Barts, where he spent New Years, according to Variety.

The US military carried out a “massive strike” in Venezuela early Saturday morning and captured Venezuela’s Nicolás Maduro and his wife, the President. Donald Trump confirmed.

“Leonardo DiCaprio is unable to join us in person tonight due to unforeseen travel disruptions and flight restrictions,” a spokesperson for the Palm Springs International Film Festival told Variety. “While we will miss celebrating with him in person, we are honored to see his remarkable work and lasting contributions to cinema. His talent and dedication to the craft continue to inspire, and we are delighted to celebrate him with the Desert Palm Achievement Award tonight.”

The Palm Springs International Film Festival did not immediately return a request for comment. Variety posted a video of DiCaprio accepting the award at X.

“Movies are still meant to be seen together in the theater. Right now, that belief is more important than ever,” DiCaprio said. “Original films are hard to make and hard to protect, but movies are still important. Not content, but cinema, stories made by people meant to be shared in a dark room in a public space.”

Palm Springs International Airport announced at X on Saturday that departing flights were on hold.

“PSP TRAVEL ALERT: FAA air traffic control issue affecting SoCal airspace today. Departing flights are grounded. Flights have been able to arrive, although some inbound flights have been diverted and delays are expected. Check with your airline for the latest flight status,” the statement read.

Maduro and his wife arrived in Brooklyn on Sunday and will face narcoterrorism and weapons charges in upstate New York.

Trump said Saturday that until a permanent leader is found, the US government will “run” Venezuela “until such time as we can make a safe, proper and prudent transition.”

The president said the US government will not risk another person taking over the country.
