Democrats call Trump’s operation in Venezuela an ‘inevitable crime’

The Democrats’ anger at President Donald Trump’s performance over the weekend in Venezuela is now turning into demands that he be removed from office by other members of the party on the left.

Several progressives have now called for Trump to continue after the administration staged strikes in Caracas and kidnapped Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife.

“Many Americans woke up with a sick feeling of déjà vu. Under the guise of freedom, the administration’s warmongers have lied to justify the invasion and dragged us into an illegal, endless war so they can extract resources and increase their wealth,” Rep. Delia Ramirez, D-Ill., a member of the House “Squad” weekend X posted on X.

“We must pass Congresswoman Ilhan Omar’s War Powers Resolution asserting the authority of Congress, and Trump must be impeached.”

Ramirez was talking about the decision led by Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., aimed at preventing Trump from taking military action against Venezuela.

Meanwhile, Rep. Dan Goldman, DN.Y., who is facing a primary challenge from the left, criticized Trump for bypassing Congress to launch what he called “war” with Venezuela, and said the administration failed to provide lawmakers with “any satisfactory explanation.”

“This violation of the United States Constitution is an unconstitutional crime,” Goldman said in a statement. “I urge my Republican colleagues in the House of Representatives to finally join Democrats in asserting the authority of Congress to impeach this president for this egregious violation of the Constitution.”

Representative April McClain Delaney, D-Md., did not mention Trump by name, but sent to X, “Let’s be clear, invading and occupying another country without a congressional declaration of war is an unforgivable crime. Whether it makes sense to pursue impeachment as the best strategy to end this lawlessness is our most strategic decision to judge strategically.”

And Golden State gubernatorial Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., did not voice support for Trump’s impeachment when asked at a press conference in California, according to local outlet Pleasanton Weekly.

Progressive House candidates also spoke, including Kat Abughazaleh, who is running for an open seat in Illinois.

“I want Congress to use its power, stop this conflict, and impeach this war criminal president,” Abughazaleh posted on the Bluesky app.

Republicans and Democrats, for the most part, are very different in their responses to the operation in Venezuela.

Democrats have accused Trump of violating US law to launch an illegal attack on a sovereign country.

Republicans, on the other hand, have defended it as a successful move to take down a dictator and actor who has long been hostile to the US and the region as a whole.

Top GOP lawmakers also said there was no need to notify Congress ahead of what they called law enforcement action instead of military action.
