Democrat Eileen Higgins wins the Memi Mayor race, ending a 30-year term

It took nearly 30 years, but Democrats finally broke a decades-long losing streak in Miami, Florida, a city known as the “Gateway to Latin America.”

Democrat Eileen Higgins, former County Commission, lost to Republican Emilio Gonzalez, former city manager, on Tuesday in the Mayor’s Runoff Runoff, according to media reports.

While the election was not technically a face-off at the ballot box this year between a Democrat and a Republican, with both parties pouring in resources and competition.

President Donald Trump endorsed Gonzalez and this past weekend took to social media to emphasize that the Miami Mayoral election is “a big and important race!”

Meanwhile, Florida’s Republican party poured resources into Gonzalez’s promotion.

But the Democrats, empowered by the victory of a few months of the election 205 and with a great highlight of the double week in the special election in the district of Reming Ronsealing in the state of Tennessee, are aiming to win in Miami.

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) and affiliated parties are invested in the race.

DNC chairman Kent Martin told FOX News Digital the following way “in light of the historic excess in Tennessee and the record Democratic Omentum across the country this year,” the DNC is now focused on “Miami’s Mailoff Rubaff.

Martin added that the DNC was “all-in” for Higgins.

Florida was once the largest member of the General Election Battlegroup, but has shifted significantly to the right in the past decade.

Florida Gov Desantis won re-election by nearly 20 points in 2022, while Trump carried the state by 13 points in the previous Presidential election.

But Miami remains a blue oasis in a blue country. Trump lost the city in the last presidential election, although the President won MIAMI-Dade County by 11 points.

Key takeover from the 2025 election

Higgins, a mechanical engineer and former director of the Peace Corps in Belize, focused on the debate on cost effectiveness and making local government more efficient and faster during his campaign.

Higgins captured 36% of the vote in the NOVO 4 election, with Gonzalez coming in at 19%, in a field with many elements. Apart from the topping topping 50%, the competition towards Tuesday’s realoff.

Higgins will succeed Republican Mayor Francis Suarez, who has held national attention for the past two years as he briefly and successfully ran for the GOP presidential nomination.
