A narrow street that resembles the Vietnam War Memorial in Westminster will soon bear a new name – Charlie Kirk Way.
During a heated meeting filled with accusations of partisan politics and debate over the role of local governments, leaders in the city of Orange County voted 4 to 1 to restore all American skies. Kirk’s name will appear in a 3-inch font below the street’s official name.
Mayor Chi Charlie Nguyen, a Republican running for change because he said Kirk “shows the values that make Westminster special: Pride in our country, belief in our freedom.”
Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA and one of the influential figures of the Purcy Party, was shot dead by a sniper at Utah Valley University in September.
The 31-year-old’s death, which was enjoyed in retrospect and controversy, has created mixed feelings and discussions across the country about how to remember the icon of conservation.
In Villa Park, it is said that a high school teacher allegedly removed a memorial to Kirk that was placed by students. In Calabasas, a teacher was placed after officials after contact were linked to social media incidents allegedly likening Kirk to a Nazi.”
In Huntington Beach, another city of Orange County Almost at the center of the national war debates, in September on the KIRK Memorial when a group of people joined the crowd to chew, “white men fight back.”
The Mayor of Westminster Vice Carlos Manzos, the Lone Democrat on the dais and in the vote that must vote against the fame of Kirk, at one point appeared at a loss of words of Nguyen’s proposal. He said it was unfair that Kirk did not live in Westminster and had no social responsibilities. He accused his colleagues of sponsoring Kirk’s death to score political points.
“That’s what you’re doing – exploiting a political crisis,” he said. “He’ll go out there and campaign for it and say, ‘Look, I did this in my town.'”
Councilwoman Amy Phan West, meanwhile, criticized the small font on the street sign as an inadequate way to honor Kirk. A different proposal he presented to design Oct.14 – Kirk’s birthday – Since Charlie Kirk’s day in the city and passed on Wednesday.
“I would like to take this opportunity to recognize Charlie Kirk as an American patriot and a staunch champion of freedom of speech,” he said. “His commitment to defending the principle of open dialogue and opposing tyranny has had a profound impact on our nation’s debate.”
Manzo chased his colleagues in forcing the debate of the state of Westminster instead of political challenges and making life better for the residents, the complaint was attended by many residents who spoke at the meeting. At one point, Manzo said the West and Nguyen were trying to “republican and each other.”
Replacing the street signs to add the Kirk name is expected to cost $3,000, according to a city staff report.
Westminster has faced its share of financial challenges in recent years and in 2022 appeared on the brink of bankruptcy. That same year, residents voted to extend the city’s 1% tax until 2043 to help bleed the city’s budget. Without the funding, Westminster was set to be withdrawn by 2024, even with major cuts.
“The fact that you are using our tax dollars for your pet projects, your Partisan politics, Tami Dam Hammell was during the meeting. “Stop stealing our time and money with your crap. Go back to all city business and not your Partisan business.”
