In 2008, M. Night Shyamalan wrote, directed, and produced what many consider the worst movie of his career. What is happeningcurrently logging 17% critical score against 24% audience score with 24% finding rotten tomatoes, he came with the agreement that “they started with a promise, but unfortunately it went down.” Many did not know at the time, however, that this was completely intentional.
Shamalan wanted to make a B-board B-BEDGED BEDGED that questioned 60s horror films, like Alfred Hitchcock’s Birds. He even snubbed this one before release, calling it “a sweet, sweet B-movie” while doing press.
Some filmmakers like to go back to when their work never stops. In this case, after the reconstruction, there is no other explanation than that he did exactly what he set out to do What is happening.
That is a great offer What is happening he was deliberately intended to be a b-movie talent involved. Say what you will about Mark Wahlberg and Zooey Deschanel; they are good actors when they stay in their lane. Just look 500 days of summer and The departed And please tell me that they didn’t deliver exactly what those movies are called. They did exactly what they were told here, too, and what you do with the woodpeckers is part of the assignment.
Wahlberg says in full, “plastic. I’m talking to the plastic plant. I’m still doing it,” while appreciating as much toxicity as possible about the toxicity, “it’s part of putting it on plants,” it’s part of the joke. The talent here isn’t just in the writing but in Wahlberg’s ability to keep a straight face while Elliot goes down the escarpment trying to figure out why everyone close to him is killing himself.
The same goes for zooy dence dence, loudly shouting things like “We’re not just going to stand here as bystanders!” and “We should NOT be one of those ******* in the news who watch crimes happen and do nothing! We don’t appreciate *******!” It’s so bad it’s almost poetic, and Shyamalan knew exactly what he was doing when he wrote the script. We’re talking about a plant-borne pathogen that’s forcing people to take control of their lives in the best ways they can. And the reaction from the talent involved in most cases is: “Oh Nooooo!”
I’ll be the first to admit that I didn’t see it What is happening until years after its release from the sport. The main reason is that my friends and family left expecting another The sixth sense, – And denial, Symptomsor A small townand told me it’s bad when those expectations aren’t met. Marketing of What is happening It was sold as a thriller, and I can only imagine the confusion when viewers bought tickets expecting more. Everyone told me the same thing: The story doesn’t make sense, the acting is bad, and it falls apart in the third act.
Years later, curiosity got the best of me, I finally sat down with it. I loved it. But I grew up grinding two-dollar DVD bins at Walmart and watching b-movies all the time. Look at it What is happening he felt exactly the same to be watched Sharknado or Genomic: shock and awe.
The biggest giveaway for me was the way this story was attacked. Told mostly through news bumpers detailing what’s happening in affected communities, it’s only a matter of time before the setup gets ridiculous. There is a situation where Elliot, wanting the answers his mood ring can’t provide, easily finds a radio tied to a telephone post in the middle of nowhere to go back to the point where he entered the base.
Retroactive reviews are now celebrating What is happening by B-BIGS BUGPE BUGPECH SHARCE. But it’s easy to see why it’s bursting with critics. The $60 million budget made it look too good to be a B-movie. The cinematography and sound design were very clean and refined. If it had been marketed as a straight up creepy horror movie with creepy characters, bright colors, and a gritty aesthetic, audiences would have known they were in for it. Instead, the marketing team played it straight, and the omission was found to be a standard tile.
If you are willing to donate What is happening Second chance, watch it with high B-movie expectations and you’ll have a good time. On the face of it, it’s a bad movie. But if you think about the intention of the intention of Shyamalan and Wahlberg and Deschanel with the commitment of this, it becomes a very interesting thing.
