Ben Affleck talks about the “huge embarrassment” he experienced after the Oscars snubbed him in the Best Director category.
Affleck, 53, appeared Jimmy Kimmel Live! Monday, January 5, and remember how he reacted when he learned in 2013 that he was not chosen to direct the show. The Argowhich ended up winning the Academy Award for Best Picture that year.
“It was the year, the worst thing for everyone to tell you, ‘You’re going to be nominated, you’re going to be nominated,'” Affleck told the broadcaster. Jimmy Kimmel58, adding, “And then, of course, I wake up that morning, and sure enough – and, by the way, it’s not. [unlike] any time in the morning I would not have been nominated as the Best Director. But suddenly, it’s a big shame. I woke up with people [said],’You were not selected.’”
Kimmel admitted he thought about Affleck while watching Leonardo DiCaprio he lost the Best Actor award to Timothée Chalamet at the Critics’ Choice Awards the night before. Currently, One Battle After Another – the film starring DiCaprio, 51 – received the awards for Best Picture and Best Director at the ceremony.
“I thought, boy, he’s got a lot of better places to be,” Kimmel joked of DiCaprio. “And the film won Best Picture. Director Paul Thomas Anderson he wins Best Director, then he doesn’t win. And I think you must be very upset [he had to leave] anything he was taken by plane – a boat somewhere – and he would be gone. He came to lose.”
Kimmel’s sympathy for DiCaprio drew Affleck The Argo insult, “Because this is probably the worst award show ever,” he thought. “I think he is selling less because The Argonot only was it nominated for an Oscar for Best Picture, you won Excellent picture. You starred in it and directed it, and you didn’t get nominated in any category … it’s like the movie directed itself.”
Affleck admitted that he “felt” the same way at the time. On the day the Oscar nominations were announced, she attended the 18th Critics’ Choice Awards in January 2013 and faced a line of reporters on the red carpet.
“It seemed like 500 people were dying to talk to me,” he recalled. “And each of them [said]’Hello. So, it’s boring.’ What do you say to that? ‘Ha, ha, yes. It’s amazing.’”
However, to shine, he ended up winning the award for Best Director The Argo that night, besting Steven Spielberg for Lincoln again Kathryn Bigelow for Black Egg Thirty.
“This negative event turns into something positive,” said Affleck, who congratulated Kimmel on winning the 2026 Critics’ Choice Award for Best Talk Show.

While accepting the trophy at Sunday’s ceremony in Santa Monica, California, Kimmel thanked “all the writers and actors and producers and union members, many of you in this room who have supported us, who have stepped forward with us and reminded us that we do not take free speech for granted in this city or in this country. Your actions were important and we appreciate them.”
