BC is doing business with India, an ‘important market’ for the province, Eby said

BC’s premier will lead a trade mission to India to promote trade and products as US President Donald Trump’s tariffs remain in place.

Premier David Eby announced Tuesday that the trade project will boost BC businesses, precious minerals and sustainable wood products and will build on the previously announced Look West initiative.

“With unreasonable tariffs from the US impacting BC workers and businesses, it is more important than ever to deepen strategic relationships with international partners to attract new investors and support good-paying jobs in British Columbia,” said Eby.

“India is an important market for BC with huge trade opportunities. This trade mission is about deepening our relationship, supporting good jobs in BC and strengthening our position as the economic engine of Canada’s new economy.”

Eby, along with Jobs and Economic Growth Minister Ravi Kahlon, will meet with government and business leaders in New Delhi, Mumbai, Chandigarh and Bengaluru (Bangalore).

According to the International Monetary Fund, India’s growth forecast was seven percent in 2025 and 6.1 percent in 2026.

“British Columbia has the highest share of exports to India of any province,” Kahlon said in a statement. “Building on our Look West initiative, the trade mission to India will showcase BC’s strengths in clean energy, sustainable forestry, responsible mining and clean technology. By attracting investment and reducing our dependence on the US market through diverse trade partnerships, we will create good jobs and prosperity for all British Columbians.”

Eby said he is looking forward to the upcoming trade campaign, building on recent trading activities in Asia and Europe.

“This is also a time of incredible opportunity,” he said.

“India itself has been a major target of the Trump administration. They are looking to rapidly deepen relations with countries other than the United States.”
