An orange alert was issued by the US Geological Survey (USGS), an earthquake with a depth of 17 kilometers, for shopping areas. The Orange Alert indicated that “significant damage” should be expected.
In a post on Facebook, the Ministry of Health of Afghanistan confirmed that the earthquake hit the provinces of Samangani and Balkh.
“Preliminary reports indicate that more than 15 people have died and around 320 have been injured, although rescue efforts are ongoing and the numbers may change,” the statement read.
In the episode, the spokesperson of the department, Dr. Sharafat Zaman Amar said local hospitals had been asked to “be ready to receive more patients,” and said the number of injuries could rise.
