When beloved characters like EC Segar’s Popeye become public domain after copyright expires, filmmakers are free to do whatever they want with the likeness, for better or for worse. 2023 gave us a slasher Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honeyand last year he brought it to us A mousetrapequally violent and mindless takes over Steamboat Willie. This year, our beloved spinach-loving sailor with a heart of gold enters the ranks with Popeyo is a murderous mantake on a violent and surprisingly well-thought-out man and at times a man who uses his big arm without retribution.

Just as Lore kicks in, we learn about the Cannery through the shady dealings of mogul lex alistair (Richard Lounello) and his lawyer, Margot Harrigan (Angela Relucio). Margot raises concerns about the taint of pollution that’s been keeping the canneries down for decades, and Lex brushes off her concerns with the kind of confidence that’s well-done that shows something.
We’re introduced to Dexter (Sean Michael Conway), an aspiring film designer dealing with the urban legend of a mermaid. He wants to break into Cunchery with his long-term and so-called crush, Olivia (Elena Juliano), before the property is sold and demolished. Joining them is Lisa (Marie-Louise Boisnier), her love interest, Seti (Jeff Thomas), and their mutual friend, Katie (Mabel Thomas). Katie’s Jealous, Spirited Boyfriend Joey (Steven McCormack) dislikes her friendship with Dexter, prompting her to check out the Cannery with her Buddies Jesse (Curner Turner) and Terry (Paul Konye).
Dirty spinach and senseless violence

Almost immediately upon entering the Anchor Bay Cannery, Dexter’s friends started dropping like flies. Heads are knocked back, bones are broken, shots are fired, and people are impaled as a sailor man defends his turf. Meanwhile, Dexter and Olivia discover the truth about the tainted cans of spinach that left the place, and the next server, before it was closed for good. They have good reason to believe that the sailor man was once an ordinary boy who ate a dangerous product and was transformed into the one they are now trying to escape.

Movies are the same Popeyo is a murderous manwhich is only there to exploit the familiar Iconic structures in a very mature and strange way, clearly not meant to be taken seriously. Half the fun is watching the gems build and carry them completely in your pocket because it’s a good game, and coming with back sticks is part of the charm. As a slasher, this entry works because Doolan and Ryan put a real effort into the traditional understanding of the origin that supports the stupidity they didn’t accept.

The description of his facial deformity, great charm, and supernatural powers serve to transport the terrifying essence that forced him to enter the Urban Legend Terrion if you are willing to break out a little with the love of the game.
