TUNE put it together

A favorite song took the stage for two men and their wives – resulting in lives being saved and a true blessing to celebrate this time of year and always.

Pastor Tim Jones, left, was a “one-20,000” match for Don Herbert, who needed a kidney to survive. These two men would not have met if not for the song they love. (Tim Jones / Don Herbert)

Pastor Tom Tim Jones, a few years ago, had started leading his new church in Kanappolis, North Carolina. On a Saturday morning a few weeks before the holidays, he hosted an open house.

He set up a “Meet the Pastor” table at the front desk near the front door as the announcers played his favorite song, “Plant Mercy,” by the Indiana-based Gaather Vocal Band.

Catchy Tune caught the ears of a stranger sitting in his car as he waited for his wife. “Order Mercy” was Don Herbert’s Cong, too. Pulled by the usual Hlody, he got out of his car and went to the teacher’s desk.

The men struck up a conversation, quickly bonding over a mutual love of Gospel music. Their conversation was short, simple and sweet.

As they said their Goodbyes, little did they know that this divinely aligned connection was just the beginning of the Godwink thread to unfold.

Two weeks later, Herbert received devastating news from his doctors at Duke University Hospital.

Without a kidney transplant, he would soon die. His family members and close friends were immediately checked – but everyone failed to get help.

Herbert’s wife, Belinda, poured her heart out on Facebook, pleading for donations to save her husband’s life.

Reverend Jones was at his computer when the post mysteriously appeared.

The chances of her being a donor were very low.

As soon as he recognized the name, he felt moved to bring me into faith and grace. She made the call and was quickly scheduled for a test, even though the nurse on the phone told her the chances of being a Donor were very low.

First blood was close: His blood was perfect match. The two men, at that time, started hatching a plan together and met their wives about it.

The men began weeks of intensive medical analysis, unsure of what would happen.

Finally, the transplant team posted the news.

Jones was a perfect match for Herbert’s “20,000”.

By the time Suncher Day arrived, the two men, along with their wives, Sherry and Belinda, had become close friends. The doctors told them that Jones’ procedure would ‘probably take two hours; Herbert’s Transplant surgery will follow.

It sounded easy enough.

God’s plan was different

The couple waited anxiously as the first operation began.

Two hours turned into five – it was stretching to seven. The wives prayed when they were wandering and worried.

When the doctors were finally ready to bend Herbert over for the surgery, they paused for a long time to explain to the women what they were doing. During the pastor’s surgery, the doctors found something hidden behind his kidneys.

A dangerous aneurysm in the renal artery, like a bomb in the roof, was ready to burst at any moment. If it had exploded – during or after the operation – the result could have been fatal.

But because Jones had responded to the heartfelt advertising of the social media by Herbert’s wife – and he felt an incomparable desire and kindness that he did not try – God led the surgeons who were about to threaten the life of the clergy.

The doctor summed up the greatness of the moment with a quiet pause: “Tim, you saved Don’s life – but in the process, you saved your own.”

That same year, when Christmas came, the men had discovered and remained in awe of the wonderful God in their lives, beginning with a popular song.

However, they discovered that there was a final goddess hidden in the woods ‘MCGuire lyrics of “Armed with Kindness”: “If you’ve ever tried to help a friend, a helping hand can lift you up.”

When people ask someone for help in need, God’s abundant grace will bless them with God they never expected.
