The police remained on high alert in this area, and the Japanese area was recorded.

The toilet encounter came about a month after he roamed a grocery store in the same suburb and reportedly attacked a person in the parking lot before sleeping on top of a customer and attacking a food counter.

According to AFP, the bear was about 1.4 meters long and placed the store’s fish and sushi selection before stepping on avocados in the fruit section.

In the same week, a man was killed by a bear while picking mushrooms, and another person was found confused in an alleged attack, marking the roots of such disputes, said Japanese officials.

In one of several bear attacks in October, a farmer ran into Gojome Town, in northwestern Japan. The victim, a 20-year-old, called the police, Nhk reported, told the authorities that he was bitten and climbed by a bear on his property. He was taken to hospital and treated for minor injuries.

Members of Japan Ground Defense Members and others set up a box trap to capture bears in Kazuno, Akita Preparm, Northern Japan on Wednesday, November 20, 2025.

In another confirmed death, a woman in her 70s died in September while picking mushrooms in Miyagi Prefecture. He was with three friends when the attack took place, the source said.

Reports of BEAR attacks in Japan, including in residential neighborhoods, have become more common in recent years, partly due to population decline and climate change, which impacts bears on food sources and, in turn, their cleaning cycles.

Thirteen people have died in BEAR attacks in Japan since the beginning of April, according to the Environmental Protection Agency, and the total number of attacks stands at 220 – and the record, most reported deaths in Wate Prefecture.

Acorns and beechnuts are the bears’ primary food sources. In years when these resources have declined in their natural environment, there are more opportunities for them to enter residential areas in search of food, thus increasing the chances of human encounters.

In response to the uptick in attacks, the Japanese government has beefed up the military to help local hunters chase bears. Armed police are also allowed to shoot animals as people hunt them down.
