At the beginning of October, the national average was 135 prisoners in 100 places available. The Dijon prison, built in 1853, is in poor condition, with 311 inmates in 180 places, according to the justice department.
Guards saw the two men escape from Dijon prison before dawn.
The 32-year-old left a message in his cell, saying he had been held “for too long,” according to Dijon public prosecutor Olivier Caracotch. It was not clear how long he was held.
Union official Ahmed Saih, who represents the prison police, told AFP shortly after the incident that the inmates were using “old saws,” and that other tools had been found in the past.
The saws may have been delivered by drones, Caracotch said following the escape, with several people already convicted of being delivered by drones at the same prison.
