Kimmel’s own show has seen its fair share of challenges, too, including a temporary hiatus in September 2025 due to comments the comedian made behind a right-wing political activist. Charlie KirkThe fatal shooting that month.

“We hit a cliff over the weekend when the MAGA gang tried hard to brand this kid who killed Charlie Kirk as anything but one and did everything they could to score political points on him,” Kimmel said on his show after Kirk’s shooting, which drew criticism.

Amid growing pressure from members of the President Donald TrumpTelevision station managers and television station managers to put the show on the air or cancel it, ABC put the show on hold for six nights. At the time, local networks owned by Sinclair Broadcast Group and Nexstar Media Group refused to air the show.

Returning to his late-night slot later, Kimmel said, “It wasn’t my intention to denigrate the young man’s murder. I don’t think there’s anything funny about it.”

Kimmel and his talk show were also rocked in November 2025 by the death of Cleto Escobedo IIIthe leader of the show’s house band and the comedian’s childhood friend. Kimmel paid tribute to Escobedo in his opening monologue in the quick clip after his death, before taking a short break from the show.

Kimmel said on the Nov. 11 episode that he “has to do some solid monologues” in his two decades of hosting. Jimmy Kimmel Live!“but this one is very difficult, because last night, early in the morning, we lost someone very special who was too young to walk.”
