Home in the Los Angeles area of the New York Liberty star Sabrina Ionescu and her husband, a former NFL player Hroniss Grasuwas broken into on Monday, December 15, with the suspects stealing $60,000 worth of purses, NBC4 Los Angeles reported.
Ionescu, 28, and Grasu, 34, were not at home during the robbery.
The Los Angeles Police Department told NBC4 that two suspects, who were wearing snow masks, entered by breaking a sliding glass window in the back of the residence, which was tripped.
Police are still reviewing security camera video and no arrests have been made as of Tuesday afternoon, December 16.
Ionescu plays his regular season basketball in Brooklyn, but is originally from the west coast. He grew up in the San Francisco area, while Grasu grew up in Los Angeles. Both were standout athletes at the University of Oregon, although their college careers did not pan out.
Ionescu and Grasu began dating in 2021 and married in 2024 in a ceremony that included former NBA stars. Pau Gasol again Steve Nash, Vanessa Bryant and, fittingly, the Oregon Duck.
“March 10, 2024🤍,” Ionescu wrote on Instagram after the wedding alongside a carousel of photos. “The day I married my best friend, my other half. The best day of my life. I love you, always and forever ❤️”
Ionescu is the latest professional athlete to have his home burglarized over the past year. Just one night earlier, the Tennessee Titans will be on defense Jeffery Simmons‘ home was robbed while on his way to face the San Francisco 49ers. In November, the Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders‘ home was robbed while making his NFL debut.
Last year, a series of robberies plagued NFL players, with the suspects often choosing to hold their own while the players were on the field on game day. Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce again Joe Burrow they were all targeted, resulting in a former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III urging the league to do more to protect players’ homes.
“I just think that, collectively, the NFL should do something to protect the players’ homes while they’re away,” Griffin III, 35, told Self. Us Weekly last December. “The NFL has the power to do it. Yes, it might cost some money, but you have to protect these players and their families when they’re not at home.”
Aaron Rodgersthen working for the New York Jets, told reporters last season that he employs full-time security at his home and that personal safety is not far from his mind.
“It’s something we all think about from time to time,” he said. “You are exposed that way [the thieves] I don’t care if there are cameras on or an alarm set. They will go in and out quickly.”
The disturbing trend has extended to the NBA as well, with the players Bobby Portis, Mike Conley Jr. again Luka Dončić they all fell victim. Ionescu is believed to be the first WNBA player to have her home burglarized at the time.
Ionescu was the No. 1 pick in the 2020 WNBA Draft and has played all six years with the Liberty, helping lead the franchise to its first championship in 2024.
