David Spade hit the mall’s tree-lighting festival by dropping the word “Christmas.”
During Sunday’s Exisode of Spade and Dana Cary’s “Fly on the Wall” Podcast, “the 61-year-old actor called the organizer of the Christmas lighting festival for Christmas lighting” because of the Christian holiday during the event.

Calovey pointed out that he and Spade know many people who follow religions other than Christianity and added, “I have never met another religious faith that is upset about a Christmas tree.”
“I said stop bulls—,” Spade said.
“Yeah, because everyone loves Santa and the tree and the whole trip,” Cary said.

Callovey went on to share his opinion that while Christmas has always been a religious holiday for Christians, it has become something more over time, especially in countries like the United States.
Caryty said: “If you believe, it’s about Christianity. “But I think at this time in America, it’s just Christmas. It’s a fun holiday.”
However, Carvey noted that he opposes speech restrictions.
“I don’t like the thought police,” said the Dana Carvey Show alum. “I don’t like having words I can’t use.”

“I don’t like to have an anti-Christian feeling because Christmas to me wasn’t really about that because I’m a Christian,” Spade said.
While Cary was described by Spade as a “worldly” Christian and “over” Star, “Joe Dirt” Star said it was “more spiritual.”
Spade expressed his opinion that the Christian faith is treated differently than other religions.
“Like this where we get the hammer? You can’t say that about anybody else,” she said.
He went on to say: “We are hitting the ground in Africa,” he continued to hit. “It’s like this is not the year to be a Christian. I’ll tell you that.”

“A lot of that, it’s hard,” Spade said.
Human groups are raising concerns about the persecution of Christians in parts of Africa.
The June 2025 report of international concern (ICC) documented a “disturbing rise” in violence against Christians in several African countries, especially Nigeria, murders, massacres.
President Donald Trump announced in late October that he was designating Nigeria as a “country of special concern,” citing the killing of Christians in the West African nation. Pope Leo XIV, the Ministry of Education and celebrities including Nicki Minaj have also condemned the recent mass killings in Nigeria.

After highlighting the persecution of Christianity in Africa, Spade redirected the conversation to the latest Christmas tree lighting snub.
“We can call it a Christmas tree,” said Chade. “I will still go to these supermarkets. I don’t want to offend people by saying it. But there are so many things and different religions.”
Spade’s comments come after the city of Portland came under fire once again hosting its annual tree-lighting ceremony and boycotting any use of the word “Christmas.”
This event, held on November 28, was filled with Christmas lights, a traditionally decorated tree and a visit from Santa Claus, but it did not promote any talk about Christmas.
Instead, organizers are promoting the holiday event as the annual tree lighting regime of “Portland 41st 41,” According to social media accounts of the square cupthouse, where the tree is displayed.

Social media commentators complained online that the city refused to mention the word “christmas.”

Portland Democrat Keith Wilson’s office also pointedly called the event a “Christmas Tree Lighting” in a response to FOX News Digital while brushing up on criticism of the event.
“Mayor Wilson was pleased to join the annual Christmas tree lighting alongside Christmas and holiday celebrations,” Wilson’s office said when asked. “That said, the merger otherwise feels like a real reach.”
