Trump Tasks U.S. WRESTRACTION secretary with Russia-Ukraine talks – nationally

In a matter of days, Secretary of the Army Dan Driscoll was removed from the leadership of the military bureaucracy – where he was cutting red tape to quickly buy cheap drones – in the Trump Administration’s fight to end the Russia-Ukraine War.

The BooLish War Veteronan, who was a former godmother and a friend of the Vice President JD Vance from the US President Donald Trump on Monday and Tuesday, looked at the latest phase of the talks on a near agreement to stop fighting.

Trump appears to believe Driscoll’s efforts are going well, posting on social media that “My team has made great progress.”

“In order to complete this peace process,” I directed my Tuesday Steve Witkoff to meet with President Putin in Moscow and, at the same time, the Secretary of the military Dan Dan will have a meeting with the Ukrainians. “

It’s an unlikely assignment for the top military leader, who got the job in February at the age of 38. His confirmation hearing focused on how the army could make a military base, not the size of the army.

Hitting an unexpected prolokamay

Driscoll only learned about his new role as negotiator about a week before he sat down at the table from Zelenskyy, the US official said.

The official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive issues, said Driscoll had planned to visit Ukraine but the trip was aimed at learning more about how their forces were using peace in the war, not to discuss peace.

The official said that after Driscoll was named as a special representative by the White House, he first went to Europe to take the oath of office before going to Ukraine.

There, Driscoll held hands with Zelenskyy and expressed his admiration for the Ukrainian military, saying that even the most powerful American forces “have never defended their country.”

“When the army looks and you see how good you are, it’s amazing,” said Zelenskyy last week. The Ukrainian leader said he spoke at about five o’clock with Vence and Driscoll about this proposal.

Driscoll’s work in Ukraine seems to have paid off, because from there, he joined Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Witkoff and other top negotiators in Geneva to discuss Abu Dhabi to negotiate with the Russians. Talks with Moscow were only possible a week earlier, the official said.

The Trump administration has shaken things up

Some experts say his role in the negotiations is out-of-the-box with the Trump administration that may or may not pay off.

“I think that what is useful in this administration is its willingness to remove ideas and try things,” said Max Bergmann, director of the Europe, Russia and EURASIA program at the center of strategic studies and stars. But he added, “I had never heard of Dan Driscoll, to be frank, in the Ukraine talks on Russia at all.”

Driscoll’s value is his connection to the Vice President, Bergmannn said. Driscoll has been known by vance as a law professor at Yale University and previously served as vance’s adviser, giving the secretary of the arvery a direct line to the Trump administration – and getting negotiations.

“There’s something to be said about having someone who can do the vice president’s messaging so it has political juice,” said Bergmann, who served in the State Department in President Barack Obama’s Administration.

But Bergmann said that it is also necessary to be professional, especially in an issue like Russia’s war with Russia and Ukraine: “The details are really important here.”

Daniel fried, the organizer of the Atlantic Council who was the American ambassador to Poland, said Driscoll can overcome the lack of expertise if he has someone to advise him. Also, the fact that Driscoll is trusted by management is a notable asset.

“You don’t want to have someone who takes the risk of sponsoring the Ukrainians or the Russians and they don’t have the confidence of the Trump Administration,” Fried said.

Driscoll’s ambitions as a politician

Driscoll’s resume did not suggest he would become America’s top negotiator trying to end Europe’s worst war since 1945, despite his political ambitions.

Driscoll told senators during his hearing that he “joined the army as a public school kid in the middle of the mountains of North Carolina in Vietnam and was a military decoder in World War II.

“Most importantly, I intend to be the military secretary of the Army, not the generals or the bureaucracy,” he said in his statement. “It is the American soldier that our defense and our prosperity require.”

He went to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, enrolled in its business school and graduated in three years, according to a profile on the school’s website.

Driscoll served in the army as an Armor Officer for over three years and attained the rank of First Lieutenant. He deployed to Iraq from October 2009 to July 2010.

After law school, Driscoll worked for major financial firms. He was unsuccessful in the 2020 North Carolina Republican Primary, receiving about 8% of the vote in a crowded field.

Driscoll has some negotiating experience as secretary of the military, including the need for the military to continue to use the last live fire return range of the live force in Hawaii so it can send troops to Asia and the Pacific.

Many Hawaiians and environmental activists are outraged by the US military’s history of harming the country through targeted drills and fuel leaks, and they want the country to return to sovereignty.

Driscoll visited Hawaii in July to discuss the issue with Democratic Hawaii Gov. Josh Green, who said he spends significant time talking to Driscoll and his team.

“Discussions are tentative and in the early stages,” Green’s office said this week.
