Carney, Modi Agree to Comprehensive Renewal of Trade Talks – National

Canada and India have agreed to work towards a comprehensive trade agreement, reviving efforts that began 15 years ago.
Readours from Prime Minister Park Carney and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s offices say that they have announced the beginning of negotiations on the economic partnership agreement (CEPA).
Modi also asked Carney to visit India, which is the Prime Minister’s office which he said he has accepted in early 2026.
“The ability to trade with them to be able to trade with them will be greatly helped by that (agreement),” Carney told reporters earlier Sunday at the G20 summit.
According to the study, the trade agreement will aim to double the recorded trade of $ 70 billion by 2030.
Canney’s office said CEPA would cover goods, services, investment, agriculture and agri-food, digital commerce, political mobility and sustainable development.
The two countries first started talks in 2010, but eventually ended those efforts to find certain industries that would only affect certain industries until they fall in 2023.
Trade talks between India and Canada have been suspended until late 2023 after Ottawa went public with the Indian government’s allegations that it was responsible for the killing of Harveh Nijjjar, near Vancouver in June 2023.

At the beginning of this month, the international news also confirmed that the talks are moving with Canada and the United Kingdom contaminating high-ranking Indian officials in the killing in Nijjar.
India was one of the four countries named by the head of Canada’s intelligence service, Dani Rogers, as he created efforts to suppress the espionational press and the suppression of Canadian dissidents.
When asked by reporters on Sunday about the threat that remains in India, Carney said he knows the “threat zone.”
“Regarding any kind of external disturbance, we have to stay alert – vigilant,” he said.
But the prime minister added that he sees India as a reliable trading partner.
“Canada has a very strong trade relationship with India. We are one of the largest, for example, foreign investors in India,” he said.
“What we need to do is put that by putting that sound trade agreement between the two countries, that protects Indian businesses, (a) clarification of rules, disputes and others.”
The comment contradicts what the US said during the Federal election campaign in March that the US is no longer a “trustworthy partner”.
While Canada and India plan to work on trade, the two countries alongside Australia announced a trilateral technology and construction partnership during the G20. That partnership is intended to strengthen cooperation in critical minerals, clean energy and artificial intelligence (AI).
Modi’s office said in its study that both countries confirmed their nuclear cooperation and ongoing discussions on raising funds, such as long-term supply agreements.
Canney’s office promises to increase employee productivity to strengthen “people connections.”
The PMO also added that the two leaders agreed on a regular refresher visit, including Ministers and members of the business community.
