The LSU Tigers are already searching for their next football coach after firing Brian Kelly, and the former leader of the death valley side is putting his name in the mix.
Ed Orgeron has a National Championship ring with the Tigers, and he said in a recent interview that he would like to wear the purple and gold again.
“Are you boring me? I’m one person on the phone,” he told the radio station just after Wednesday. “I just get in my truck, I can be there today.”

Orgeron led the Tigers from 2016-21, when his Star-Straided 2019 team, featuring the likes of quarterback Journ Jefferson and Ja’marrr Chase, won the national championship.
Orgeron went 51-20 during his six seasons at LSU, but was fired after a 5-5 2020 campaign followed by a 6-6 record in 2021.
Louisiana’s governor insists on controlling LSU’s next football coach following the firing of Brian Kelly
The Louisiana native lives In-State, which is why he said he had to force his truck to get off the baton rouge. But, if not, Orgeron said the next head coach must be one with the unique Tiger community.
“If they meet a candidate, is he someone who can handle the pressures of LSU and embrace the Louisiana situation?” Orgeron said in an interview. “I think it’s one of the things, whether that’s true or not, it seemed to come from Brian Kelly who never accepted the situation in Louisiana. And when you get those organizations on your side, they have a lot of power.”
While he may want to return, Orgeron has not been a head coach since that 2021 campaign. Instead, some who will lead programs elsewhere are among the first students to be reported to be in contact with the Tigers.

Among them is the Ole Miss Head Coach, whom Orgeron knows well who spent their time together as assistants to the famous Pete Pete at USC in the early 2000s. Kiffin was also hired by Orgeron as an assistant when he was the coach of Tennessee, and when he came to USC to look for the former next season, this followed him out of Sunny California.
Now, if it’s Kiffin headed to Baton Rogue, Orgeron said he wouldn’t be opposed to working with him again.
“I’m still at home in Baton Rouge. I loved it when I coached (les) miles to be the defensive line coach. I love the Tigers,” Orgeron said. “And I’m getting back into training. I’m definitely going to look into it. No doubt.”
Kelly was fired after losing to No. No. 9 Vanderbilt lost to LSU the week before, and Kiffin’s Rebels knocked off the Tigers earlier this season, 24-19.

Kelly was 34-14 with the Tigers over four seasons. He signed a 10-year, $100 million deal to become LSu’s head coach after a successful career with the Notre Dame Fight Irish.
