Five people were injured in a shooting near Howard University in Washington, DC, and two suspects were taken into custody.

According to the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), officers were called to HWard Beka NW – outside the Howard campus – around 8:30 pm local time on Friday, Oct. 24, via DC News now, NBC Washington again The Washington Post.

Three men, one woman and a 13-year-old boy all suffered life-threatening gunshot wounds, officials told the outlet, and fire and EMS personnel transported them to the hospital.

MPD told outlets that while none of the victims were students at Howard University, one of them was a student at Morgan State University.

Two people were arrested, police said, and their identities have not been released. One suspect tried to run from the scene, but was caught in a nearby McDonald’s parking lot. Officers found three weapons at the scene, the outlet reported.

The Howard University and Morgan State University football teams are scheduled to play each other on the Saturday of Howard’s weekend.

Howard said in a statement Saturday that the shooting was unrelated to the school and that no students, faculty or others were involved. The university noted that the incident appeared to have started as an argument between two people.

“HUPD [Howard University Police Department] He implemented enhanced security measures over the weekend, including an increased security presence at the university and law enforcement and law enforcement agencies in and around the area to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for all,” the University said.

“The university appreciates the quick and coordinated response of MPD and HUPD, whose actions helped protect the safety of our community, Howard added.

Morgan State did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for information.

Witnesses who were present at the time of the shooting remember hearing screams and gunshots.

The man Anthony said: “The one we heard was kicking,” He added, “We will not do anything in DC … this happens every time when it works in DC, especially at home. DC [is] it is dangerous. “

“We panicked, ran inside, and got outside 30 minutes later,” Ramirez recalled. “We weren’t trying to get shot.”

During Friday’s press conference, MPD Chief Pamela Smith urged DC residents to “put down their guns.”

“We need people to put these guns in our city,” he said, via NBC4 Washington. “We will not tolerate people entering our city with guns.”
