California wildlife officials have confirmed that there is a new wolf pack in the northern part of the state, as the number of endangered canids – and the number of livestock they prey on – continues to rise.
A newly expanded grizzly pack is roaming southern Plumas County and contains at least two adults and a cub, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife reported this week.
The pack contains a male wolf from Oregon and a female from the state’s lassen pack. Recently, State Wildlife officials also received photos of what is believed to be a Wolf Pup.
The news comes on the heels of Beyem Seyo Pack’s BUSISE last month, when the department of fish and wildlife released four wolves that had killed a large number of cattle in the Sierra Valley – the first in a century when government officials took the killers against the animals.
“As difficult a decision as that had to be made, from an environmental point of view, the population data we receive continues to suggest that the population is growing and robust,” said the agency’s gray wolf coordinator. The action was taken after a months-long campaign to use lethal force, he said.
The Beyem Seyo pack moved into a new area in October, and the new wolves quickly moved to their old land, one sign that the population is strong, he said.
With one packet gained and one packet lost, the State Stand Ruled at 10.
There are an estimated 50 to 70 wolves in the Golden State. Although a very small number, it represents a remarkable recovery for the apex predator, which was hunted and driven to extinction in the 1920s. Wolves began to repopulate California 14 years ago.
New reports from the Department of Fish and Wildlife suggest more wolves are on the way.
There are two areas where wolf activity indicates potential pockets of selection, Hunnicutt said. There were also at least 31 pups born this year to pack in California, although some have died, and the general mortality is high in the first year of life. The whaleback pack, in eastern Siskiyou County, had 10 babies this year — tying a record for the species, HunniCutt said. Another breeding season will come in the spring.
Most existing packs contain just two young wolves, meaning they may not produce the first year. That explained the “lump,” he explained.
“So what I blame him for is that this year we didn’t see a big growth, even if it just got stronger,” he said. But in a year or two, “probably most of these groups will breed and produce anywhere between six and ten children.”
The return of ‘WOLVES’ is being celebrated by conservationists who want to see native animals thrive. The growing number of wolves, however, has caused ranchers to lose their cattle.
The Beyem Seyo Pack was responsible for 88 livestock kills or injuries, which Hunnicutt called an “unprecedented” number. Not all wolves are in a position to follow cattle. There are several pockets in the province that are not close to livestock, he noted.
“California wolf recovery is going on a pretty good trajectory, with smart people,” Amaroq Weiss, Senior Wolf Advocate for the nonprofit Center for Biological Diversity, said.
The fact that things are ‘stirred up,’ with wolves fighting and packs changing, is a good thing, he said.
“You want to see that the driving force continues to emerge from people,” he said.
Weiss sees the recovery as a ‘recovery’ consultation in their protection under the forms of California and the government at risk.
There are three bills pending in the US Congress, however, that will shape back the protection of the state, including one that would confuse the wolves as endangered nationally, he said endangered nationally, he said endangered nationally, he said endangered.
By 2021, the US Fish and Wildlife Service has banned most wolves in the lower 48 states. In September 2024, the Federal Wildlife Agency filed a decision.
If the wolves were to be properly brought down, they kept their Kingdom protection.
