Two people were injured after a World War II artillery shell exploded inside an apartment building in Poland.

Around 7:30 a.m. local time on Tuesday, Oct. 21, police in Głabczzyce received reports that a window in an apartment under renovation on Mickiewicza Street was “hanging to the point of exploding,” the police said in a press release.

During the investigation, the police found that something exploded inside the apartment where two men, aged 62 and 65, and a 45-year-old woman were drinking alcohol. One of the men and the woman had blood alcohol levels 12 times above the legal driving limit in Poland, CBB news reported.

According to a police press release, both men suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the explosion. One of them had to be taken to the hospital because of a leg wound.

Other residents of the apartment building and people living in nearby houses were evacuated amid the police investigation.

Dogs have been trained to detect the scent of explosives that have helped along with bomb disposal cases from the independent counter-treatorism unit of the police in Katowice.

Initial findings indicate that the explosion was caused by a War II Artillery Shell built in the apartment, a police news release said. The owner of the property reportedly revealed that they brought the object home after finding it in the woods “several years ago.”

Another explosive site “Remembrance” where it was found that the police searched their apartments, which were supposed to be protected and neutral on military land.

“We remind you that if you find something like an unloaded Ordnance, you must not, under any circumstances, go, touch, or leave it,” the police said. “The area where it is located must be protected from access by unauthorized persons, especially children.”

“If you are in an open area or in the forest, mark this place so that no one enters and you can be easily found,” the police continued. “Report the discovery to the nearest police station as soon as possible. Officers will secure the area and notify the bomb disposal unit.

“Remember that large projectiles can range up to several hundred meters,” he concluded.

The police in Głubczyce are working alongside the district prosecutor’s office in Głabczyce to investigate the explosion in the apartment building.

The residents have left and are allowed to return to their homes after the approved building inspector.

People reached the Głubczyce police on Friday, Oct. 24, but he didn’t get an answer right away.
