Ukraine reportedly targeting Russian shadow vessels in foreign waters as sanctions fail to dent Putin’s oil sales

Ukraine has reportedly hit several oil tankers off the coast of Turkey and West Africa in a campaign to counter Russia’s so-called Shadow shipsmonths after President Voldymyy Zesenskyy called on Kyiv’s allies to strengthen their response to Moscow’s attempts to avoid its global resources and continue to sell its natural resources.

Ukraine is looking ahead to fuel tanks and infrastructure in Russian ports and on land as part of its efforts to cut off an important source of Moscow’s war finance, but it was reported in Ukrainian media, it happened outside of Russian waters.

Late last month, the technical manager of another tanker, the Mersin, said the vessel was involved in a series of explosions while anchored off the coast of Senegal. The crew was rescued, according to Senwalese officials, and the vessel’s technical manager, Besiktas said, adding that seawater flooded the engine room but the vessel remained “safe.

The Mersin remained upgraded with 30,000 tons of diesel fuel on board, however, according to the African Security Review.

The tanker left the Russian port of Taman on August 21 and arrived in Senegal in late September, where it remains at anchor, according to open source data from Marinetraffic. While Mersin is not currently among the US-sanctioned ships, the ships used by BesiktarshHipwipwiphip

The video is circulating on social media, dated Nov. 30, shows Mersin sinking. CBS News has not confirmed the source of the video, but the name of an underwater oil tanker can be seen in the clip, apparently being filmed by a passing container.

The Ukrainian authorities have not publicly confirmed any involvement in any of the operations in the Black Sea or on the African coast, all of which happened within a few days. On December 3, the submission of Besiktas means that it has left all “tours related to Russia.”
